Box Five Photography is pleased to announce a new venture with Herff Jones here in Colorado Springs, offering the Seniors a Traditional Cap and Gown portrait to commemorate their achievements. We were at Doherty High School today, and took a couple portraits for them. Here is what we’re offering…

For those of you who have been following our progress, you all know that I love to give some information regarding the photography part of this operation. Here is what our setup looks like to achieve the above results.

There are actually three strobes in this shot, although you can only see two of them. The other is tucked behind the right side of the backdrop, lighting the lower corner. Key light is a Canon 580EXII through a Wescott 43” shoot-through brolly. Set to 1/16th @ 35mm. The light on the left is a Canon 430EXII, set to 1/16th at 24mm. I flagged the left side of the flash to keep the spill off the subject. This is also what gives the nice “wrap” on the subjects faces. Behind the backdrop is a Nikon SB-28, set to 1/8th @ 24mm, sitting on the floor pointed up, just to light the lower right corner of the backdrop. Camera is a Canon 5D Mark II, with a 50mm f/1.4 lens. Exposure was 1/60th @ f/5.0. Flashes were tripped with Twin Link radio triggers.

Anatomy of a Strobist wannabe….

I’m grieving along with the rest of Red Sox Nation this morning, so I’ve decided to write something, just to get The Meltdown out of my head. I was shooting some pictures last night, checking out our newly acquired Canon 70-200 2.8L IS, which is an awesome piece of glass, as all the reviews would seem to agree as well. We are stoked to have this in our arsenal, and look forward to the improved performance over the noisy Tamron (don’t get me started…).

Anyone who’s followed our photography for a while has seen a few of our Night Lights Sessions, in which we shoot our clients against an urban background at night, lighting the subject with off camera flash. This technique is something that we’ve learned entirely from online sources, mostly from David Hobby’s amazing site, www.strobist .com. I was also lucky enough to see both Hobby and his fellow Off Camera Flash Master, Joe McNally, during their “Flash Bus Tour” earlier this year, which was an awesome learning experience as well. I encourage everyone to go and check out Strobist.com, if they want to find a literal step-by-step guide to off camera flash.

I made the above picture, with our Canon 5D Mark II (tripod mounted), 70-200 2.8L IS @ 200mm, ISO 200, 1/10th @ f/3.5. The lighting set up can be seen below.

The only thing that was different was the red background; I used that red blanket that you can see on our couch, just draped it over the edge of the table. You can see the strobes, two Canon’s and a Nikon SB-28, the setting of which I actually forgot to write down before I tore everything down…but you guys are going to have to forgive me, because all this was being shot during my beloved Red Sox and The Meltdown (still sick to my stomach). I triggered the strobes using Twin Link flash triggers, and the above picture came out of my birthday present, and my daily companion, the Canon G12. (Thank you baby!)

I made a couple of minor adjustments in Adobe Lightroom. I am loving our new glass, taking it to Denver tonight to do a Family Session on the 16th Street Mall. Stay tuned!

In case anyone’s been hiding from our Facebook page recently, or perhaps fallen off the radar for a while, we’d like to announce some big news here at Box Five Photography! Our new webpage is under construction, which will be so cool, you guys aren’t going to believe it! This will allow us to blog more freely on this site, which will still be very active, I assure you! Too, we are adding some Educational opportunities, so stay tuned on some upcoming classes, including some “Photo Walk Abouts,” which will be very entertaining and educational for all of us!

We’ve also recently teamed up with the good folks at yourgrad.com, to offer more inclusive coverage for you Senior students! Stay tuned for more on that!

And on top of all that, we’ve also recently done some Commercial Photography for McGarrity-Gassman Construction Group, who have done stunning work which we’ll feature on our new site soon!

And a blog post wouldn’t be complete without some cool new pics! We’d like to offer our Congratulations to Mark and Jessica Well on their new addition, Asher. He’s such a sweet little dude!

The Pattersons

So I’ve know Jen and Brent for years, back since the old Emergency Room days, and it was great to catch up with them and their family of FIVE (holy cow!), and we had such a great time shooting their Family Session, as well as dinner afterwards! Great family, great evening, great photos, we hope you love them!

We’ve been so busy lately, things have been crazy! We’d like to take this chance to thanks everyone along the way that has let us take their portraits, or contributed to Box Five in some fashion, whether it be burning a disc when the computer’s not working, or printing us contracts or labels, or especially watching our little Scarlettt when Mommy and Daddy are off trying to move this little dream of a photo business forward. Taking portraits for people is a passport into their lives, and we appreciate the trust our clients have put into us. It’s been an unbelievable last few years, and we’ve learned so much about ourselves and our community, and we really couldn’t be who we are without the people who hold us up. Thank you, one and all, and we’re looking forward to many more memorable moments in years to come.

The Bivin Bash!
